On Monday, December 5, 2011, guests are invited to taste and explore the various nuances of olive oil at FIG & OLIVE Melrose Place with The New Yorker contributor and olive oil authority, Tom Mueller alongside the restaurant’s owner Laurent Halasz. Open to the public from 6 – 7 p.m., attendees can enjoy a complimentary olive oil tasting and cocktails on the 50-foot marble communal table during a signing of Tom’s new novel, Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil (W.W. Norton; December 5, 2011; $25.95; hardcover).

Mueller’s passion for olives is accentuated by his surroundings in the Ligurian countryside of Genoa, Italy where he lives in a medieval stone farmhouse surrounded by olive groves. His expert knowledge hails from his investigation of adulteration and unethical practices of the international olive oil industry. From 7-9 p.m., Mueller and Halasz will share their collective olive oil knowledge through an intimate guided four-course olive oil tasting and wine pairing dinner for $85 per person (excluding tax or gratuity) in the restaurant’s indoor patio. Recent studies confirm the numerous benefits of a Mediterranean diet, a diet focused on healthy fats largely sourced from olive oil. Both hosts will educate diners on how to get the most from this prized oil including cooking tips and techniques; understanding flavor and color; palate cleansers; how to taste olive oils akin to a wine tasting, and demystifying good and bad extra virgin olive oils. Seating for this exclusive one-night-only dinner is limited up to 40 guests only. RSVP is required and can be made by calling 310.360.9100.
