Sakiet Ezzit Olive Oil Festival (Festival de l'huile d'olive de Sakiet Ezzit) was recently organized in Sfax by the municipality of Sakiet Ezzit jointly with the Association of Sciences and Nutrition of Sfax.
The new edition which was held on February 5-7, 2009, was attended by a number of researchers, academics, farmers and professionals from the area which represents one of the country’s largest olive oil production centres.
The organizers whose aim is to stress the therapeutic and culinary qualities of the golden liquid, also showcased the latest research carried out in the sector.
A round table was also held during which speakers evoked issues relative to the conservation of olive oil, the preservation of its quality, its perspectives on the national and regional level as well as the symbolic value of the olive tree.Sampling sessions were also held along with a cooking competition highlighting the use of olive oil in certain Tunisian dishes.
Sfax which has some 6 million olive trees, produces one third of the country’s olive oil production.
Tunisia is the world’s largest olive oil producer outside of the European Union, and the third largest single olive oil producer after Spain and Italy.
