Villa Gioianna

Villa Gioianna is an extremely fabulous villa located on a small working estate on the Tuscan/Umbrian border, an area known for centuries for the richness, weight and intensity of its olive oil. We produce oil from our ancient grove and welcome guests year-round to participate in the harvest, local olive oil festivals and a myriad of other activities or, if they wish, simply to relax and enjoy a superb meal grilled over olive-wood coals.
Villa Gioianna provides warm hospitality, olive oil tours, cooking lessons and an unforgettable experience of immersion in the Italian art of living. Every Fall, we hand-pick the olives in Villa Gioianna’s grove and rush them to the local olive mill to be pressed into bright green liquid gold: pungent, peppery, fragrant, altogether wonderful Umbrian olive oil. We grow Moraiolo, Frantoio, Leccino and Pendolino, and a lesser-known varietal specific to the Lago Trasimeno area, Dolce Agogia. We invite guests to join us in this Italian olive harvest adventure. Guided by an informative and charming expert, guests taste and learn about our dense local olive oils, participate in the harvest and follow the olives through pressing, learn culinary and practical olive oil secrets for health, beauty and longevity, immerse themselves in olive history at a world-class olive oil museum, work up an appetite hiking among the hills surrounding Lake Trasimeno, enjoy a supremely relaxing olive oil massage at a thermal spa, and end each day with a splendid meal of homemade pasta and Italian delicacies featuring, naturally, our olive oil. At night, they retire to one of the Villa’s wildly romantic beds, waking in the morning to a view of medieval villages, vineyards and olive groves worthy of a Renaissance masterpiece. Everyone who visits on an olive tour leaves Villa Gioianna renewed, well-fed and stuffed with wonderful memories. Tours are led by Dr Carol Firenze, author and owner of The Passionate Olive.

Grower and/or Producer
We grow olive trees

Growing in our grove are Moraiolo, Frantoio, Leccino and Pendolino, and a lesser-known varietal specific to the Lago Trasimeno area, Dolce Agogia. They range in age from approximately 40 to (I am told) an estimated 200+ years old.
We produce olive oil

We produce a limited amount of estate-bottled olive oil. Participants in our annual olive harvest tours receive a complimentary bottle. Others may purchase it directly from the Villa.
Tours and/or Tasting Bar
We provide tours of our facilities
The annual harvest tours include private tours of two local olive mills: a small, family-run yet modern facility and a more traditional, organic mill. The Olive Oil Harvest Tours are led by Dr Carol Firenze, author and owner of The Passionate Olive. Please see the longer company description at the "Company Contact" tab or contact us for more details about activities included in the Olive Harvest Tours.
We have a tasting bar
The annual harvest tours include an educational and comparative tasting of our and other local olive oils at the Villa, a tasting at each of the olive mills and a celebratory tasting of the olio nuovo at an informal but charming local olive oil sagra (festival), where guests will enjoy bruschetta, roast chestnuts and the new wine. The Olive Harvest Tours are led by Dr Carol Firenze, author and owner of The Passionate Olive.
