The Angel Tree: The Enchanting Quest for the World's Oldest Olive Tree
Author: Alex
Dingwall-Main
Publisher:
Arcade
Publishing
Date Published:
March 2004Most people wanting to
buy a tree for their front yard simply head down to their local nursery, but
Regis Latour isn't most people: he's a megamillionaire, and his front yard
is the focal point of a breathtaking estate in the Provencal mountains. The
tree, then, can't be just any tree: it has to be the world's oldest living
olive tree. So begins the odyssey undertaken by Dingwall-Main, an inventive
and intrepid landscape architect who travels throughout Europe and the Greek
Isles in search of the perfect specimen. He finally stumbles upon a
2,300-year-old olive tree situated in a remote Spanish village. One problem:
the tree isn't for sale. Such an obstacle is par for the course, as Dingwall-Main
recounts his captivating escapades teeming with nefarious nurserymen,
suspicious salesmen, and viperous villagers loathe to lose their venerated
old tree. Call it Monty Python meets Gertrude Jekyll. Dingwall-Main's
hilarious horticultural homage to all things olea is an equally
wacky, off-the-beaten-track travelogue and a perfect escape for gardeners
and gallivanters alike. Carol Haggas

Judy Ridgway's Best Olive Oil Buys Round the World
Author:
Judy Ridgway
Publisher:
Gardiner Press
Date Published:
November 2002
The criteria for inclusion in my
latest book “Judy Ridgway’s Best Olive
Oil Buys Round The World” was that an
extra virgin oil must not only come up
to exacting taste and flavour
standards but must also be on sale in
either the US or the UK or be
available on the internet.
I carried out all the tastings in 2002
and was able to include eight
Californian oils, nine Australian
oils, four New Zealand oils, two South
African oils and one Uruguayan oil
accounting for around 20% of a total
of around 125 oils. I have great hopes
of increasing this percentage in the
next edition. |

Title: The Olive Farm : A Memoir of Life, Love and Olive Oil in Southern France
When the
opportunity arises for Carol
Drinkwater and her husband,
Michel, to purchase ten acres of a
disused olive farm in the South of
France, the idea seems
ridiculously farfetched. After
all, they are newlyweds of limited
means, and Carol is still
adjusting to her role as
stepmother to Michel's two
daughters. But the splendor of the
region becomes a force they are
unable to resist. Michel presents
their life savings to the real
estate broker as a down payment
for the farm, embarking the family
on an adventure that will bring
them in close contact with the
charming countryside, querulous
personalities, petty
bureaucracies, and extraordinary
wildlife (including a ravenous
wild boar) of Provence
