Can olive oil stop grey hair?

Biswas asks:

I have pre-mature graying of hair. I am just 23. One of my friends has advised me to use an "olive oil " which, according to him, is a good measure for further graying as it is alkaline in nature. He also says that my problem is because my scalp gives off an acid substance which is the cause of the graying. Is it true?

Dr. Deane replies:

Olive oil is slightly acidic, just like the scalp. Glands in the scalp keep it acidic and salty to prevent infections. Sorry, but olive oil has no effect on the root of the hair which is genetically programmed to turn gray at a certain age.
