Thinning is a common subject discussed by table olive farmers. Advantages of thinning include larger olives which garner higher prices, higher quality fruit, lower picking costs, earlier maturity, more consistent yearly crops.
Ornamental trees are sprayed with an abscission agent so no crop develops to create a mess in areas of foot traffic. If olive blossoms are blasted off with a high pressure water hose, olives will not form.
