At McEvoy Ranch we have a wide selection of potted trees for sale for the purpose of making superior olive oil and table olives. Our primary varieties for sale are the Tuscan varieties that we use to produce our oil, although we have a wide selection of trees from Italy’s other regions, as well as Greece, Spain, and France. Due to careful tending and management practices, our trees are well suited for both large-scale orchard plantings and singly-placed landscape focal trees. Our Tuscan varieties are all vegetatively propagated on the ranch on specially designed propagation tables. Each tree has been carefully pruned and shaped to create an even-branched, balanced canopy. We remove the central leader of our single trunk trees to promote laterals between 24 and 36 inches. With the central leader removed, the tree is better able to produce strong laterals at the correct height to grow into the primary scaffolds for the open vase tree structure. We also sell multi-trunk trees with branching that begins at the base that are often preferred in the landscape setting. The Manzanillo tree is one of Spain’s finest varieties, as well as the most well-known and widely used olive variety in the world. The Manzanillo olive is commercially grown in California primarily as a table olive, but is also highly prized for its oil. Our trees are grown from cuttings in a greenhouse, then transferred to pots until fully grown, at which time they are ready for orchard planting. The trees we sell have been topped for shipping, and measure approximately 14" to 16" (including container). Olive trees need full sun and do well in areas with hot dry summers. They also do well in temperate coastal areas. The trees will not tolerate temperatures lower than 15°F. Olive trees prefer deep rich soil, but will tolerate a variety of soils, including alkaline and rocky soils. They are drought resistant once established, but do need regular, moderate irrigation.
